Children's orthodontic costs in France: quotes and reimbursement in 2026

The actual cost of children's orthodontics in France depends on the quote: practitioners set their fees freely. Subject to conditions, Assurance Maladie reimburses €193.50 per six-month treatment period, up to six periods. This reference amount is not the total price charged by the practice.

Separate three amounts when reading a quote

  • Fees: the amount charged by the practitioner for the services listed in the quote.
  • Assurance Maladie reimbursement: calculated under the applicable rules and covered services.
  • The supplementary insurer's contribution: determined by your policy, limits and conditions.

Your out-of-pocket cost is the fee minus the reimbursements actually confirmed. “100%” does not necessarily mean the whole quote will be reimbursed: identify the basis to which that percentage applies.

Coverage conditions before age 16

According to Ameli, updated 9 January 2026, prior approval is required and treatment must begin before the sixteenth birthday, within six months of approval. The application is prepared with the practitioner.

Ask the practice to confirm the process before treatment begins. Keep the documents and any response from the insurer. Booking an appointment or signing a quote does not by itself verify the administrative conditions.

Compare two quotes covering the same services

Ask what each proposal includes: assessment, appliance, visits, expected duration, replacement or repairs and retention. Check what would be charged if treatment were extended or changed. A cheaper line item does not necessarily mean a less costly care pathway.

Clarify payment timing and the documents provided for reimbursement. If several phases are planned, ask how they appear in the quote. The six-month amount and estimated total cost should remain easy to distinguish.

To understand an appliance proposal, see our guides to the palatal expansion and functional trainer. Diagnosis remains the basis for selection.

Obtain a written answer from your supplementary insurer

Send the quote to your supplementary insurer before committing. Ask for an amount in euros per service or period, the applicable limit, renewal period and any conditions. Check whether the stated amount already includes Assurance Maladie's contribution.

For your calculation, take the quoted fees and subtract only confirmed amounts. For example, with a hypothetical fee of €800, an Assurance Maladie contribution of €193.50 and a confirmed additional supplementary contribution of €300, the remainder would be €306.50. This illustrates the calculation; it is neither an average fee nor your reimbursement.

Do not confuse buying a product with treatment

The standard Myoforce appliance is listed at €50. This price covers a product, not six months of orthodontics with assessment and checks. It does not establish savings on treatment that may be needed.

General orthodontic reimbursement conditions do not mean an online purchase is automatically covered. Before expecting reimbursement, obtain confirmation for the product, any prescription and your policy.

Common questions

Is there one national price for children's orthodontics?

Fees are freely set. Assurance Maladie's reference amount does not set the practice's price; the quote identifies fees and included services.

What about after age 16?

Ameli provides a conditional exception for one non-renewable six-month period before jaw surgery. Check your situation with the practitioner and insurer. Official rules.
